On the way to Vermont, we took a scenic route. We drove out to western New York to see Palmyra and Niagara Falls. On the way we stopped in Albany to see the State House. Magnus really liked it, especially since there was a dedication of a new fireman memorial there, so there were lots of firemen in their nice uniforms and fire trucks holding up big flags.
In Palmyra, we visited the E. B. Grandin Print Shop, where the Book of Mormon was first published in 1830. The Church has really done a good job preserving the site and we learned some interesting things. The book is one of the original 5,000 printed.
We saw the Port of Palmyra on the Erie Canal:
The Palmyra LDS Temple:
The Hill Cumorah, where the Gold Plates were found, was very pretty with the autumn colors.
The next morning, we visited the Smith Family Farm and the Sacred Grove, where Joseph Smith received his First Vision.
We also visited the Martin Harris Home, and park dedicated to the Old Erie Canal. This bridge once spanned across the Canal until they filled it in and dug a new path. The park also ahd the Palmyra Aqueduct in it.
In the middle of our Palmyra visit we made an excursion to Niagara Falls which is about 90 min away. That adventure is in the next post.
When we left western New York we also made sure to stop in Fayette, NY where The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded. There were just six members in this little house on April 6, 1830. We were happy we got to visit.
From there it was on to Vermont…
