We spent the weekend in New York City. Ruth’s parents drove with us to the city and we stayed with Ruth’s brother, Matt. This was our first chance to meet his wife, Karen, and their daughter, Kate. They had just bought a house in New Jersey, so it gave us an opportunity to visit Manhattan. We spent a little time there on the way to Matt’s house. We were able to walk down to Wall Street and see the Stock Exchange and Federal Hall NM, where George Washington was sworn in as President. It was closed (due to the shut down), but Magnus liked the steps out front.
We also got to go to the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero. They have built two enormous pools with water flowing into them in the footprints of the Twin Towers. Each pool is an acre square. The site is now watched over by the new Freedom Tower (at 1776 ft. tall it is the tallest building in the western hemisphere). Along the edge of the pools are the names of all those who were lost that day.
We had good weather while were in New York, though it was very warm. It was 80° that evening. And just before we left the memorial a rainbow appeared, though it hadn’t rained.
We made it back to the car and were able to find Matt’s house. Magnus was very excited to meet another cousin and to play with another kid.
