We just returned from a five day trip in the NW corner of Washington to help celebrate Father’s Day and Dana’s birthday. We left Sunday night and stayed in Seattle with one of Dana’s old roommates from BYU, Jordan. It was good to see him and his family. Magnus really enjoyed playing with his kids and dog.
Monday morning we had a boat to catch in Anacortes, WA. The boat took us on a six hour tour among the San Juan Islands on the search for Orcas. Along the way we saw lots of sea birds, harbor porpoises, seals, and a bald eagle.
Plus the San Juan Islands are beautiful:
And we did find orcas. We thought it was neat that every orca is known by name and the whale watching boats help to track the movements of each pod of whales. The first group we found was a transient group (a pod that doesn’t live year round in the Puget Sound) made up of a mother and her three kids (the youngest was only 3 months old). We followed them for a while and even saw them eat some lunch (a seal or porpoise). It was really cool to see them in the wild.
You can see the baby in both of these shots:
They even did some headstands:
After a brief glimpse of a humpback we found the resident J-pod, a large family of orcas.
We really enjoyed our time on the boat.
We stayed the night on Whidbey Island and stopped to see Deception Pass.
